Incumbent State’s Attorney Kim Foxx Wins Cook County Democratic Primary

With Foxx’s commanding primary win, voters choose reform of an inequitable system over well-funded distractions

Chicago - Today, Kim Foxx won the Cook County Democratic Primary for State’s Attorney, allowing her to continue her work toward a safer, more just Cook County court system. The voters have spoken, delivering Foxx a decisive majority and a mandate to continue strengthening Cook County into a national model for reform. With immense gratitude for all who supported Foxx in the primary, Friends for Foxx looks forward to supporting the State’s Attorney as she continues to restore faith in Cook County’s system through the general election and beyond. “Cook County’s residents saw past one case that opponents hoped would distract from her office’s substantial progress fighting violent crime and reducing the impact of the justice system on communities of color,” said Senior Advisor Alex Sims.

State’s Attorney Kim Foxx said, “As a girl from Cabrini, I am proud to represent what’s possible for Cook County. I always talk about my background because it is important to show that people from underserved communities have the capacity to make a difference. And I want people in those communities to know that if I can make it, they can too.” Foxx continued, “I am deeply grateful for the tireless, transformational work of all who supported my campaign and those working to keep Cook County safe in these uncertain times. Trust, leadership, and experience matter now more than ever, and I am honored that the voters of Cook County put that trust in me. I am committed to the work that lies ahead on behalf of Chicago’s children and families and look forward to continuing to build a criminal justice system that is equitable for all communities.”

Senior Advisor Alex Sims said, “We thank the residents of Cook County for bringing this primary campaign to a strong finish reflective of the momentum and energy behind State’s Attorney Foxx’s vision for a more just Chicago. As we work toward Kim’s success in the general election, we will continue to prioritize the safety and health of all Cook County residents.”

“Families impacted by gun violence were frustrated by the focus on one case instead of on their loved ones. They know that the trauma and stress that cause so many murders are real. This victory validates their priorities as well,” said Communications Advisor Sylvia Ewing.

Since taking office in 2016, becoming the first African American woman to lead the Cook County prosecutor’s office, Foxx has delivered on her plans to reform the criminal justice system in Cook County. Foxx has focused resources on violent crimes rather than low-level offenses, making Chicago safer while restoring fairness to a system that has long disenfranchised low-income people and communities of color. Prosecuted the killers of Tyshawn Lee and Haydia Pendleton Foxx has led meaningful, strategic approaches to combat gun violence and beat the NRA in court over their attacks on Cook County’s common-sense assault weapons ban. Foxx has exonerated the wrongful convictions of more than 80 individuals, bringing justice to those wrongly incarcerated by an unfair system.

State’s Attorney Foxx received a staggering number of endorsements from every sector, from elected officials and presidential candidates to labor and community organizations.
