From Cabrini-Green to the courtroom — and everywhere the work led next.
I grew up in Cabrini-Green, raised by my mother and grandmother in a community the rest of the city had written off. What I learned there — about resilience, about people, about what happens when systems fail the ones they're supposed to serve — has shaped every decision I've made since.
I earned my law degree from Southern Illinois University and began my career representing children in the foster care system before joining the Cook County State's Attorney's Office as a line prosecutor. I spent over a decade in courtrooms handling the cases that shape lives, then served as Chief of Staff to the Cook County Board President, overseeing a $5 billion budget and the operations of one of the largest counties in the nation.
In 2016, I was elected Cook County State's Attorney — the first Black woman to lead the office. For eight years I ran one of the largest law firms in the country: 800 attorneys, 1,300 employees, and decisions that carried the full weight of people's lives behind them.
